| A Marriage Mission | | Joni and Friends Daily Devotional
A Marriage Mission God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.' Genesis 1:28 What a mission God gives in this verse! We are to increase, fill the earth, subdue and rule. In other words, we are to give shape to the world around us and take on the glorious responsibility of making and owning it. We are to create, produce and shape the creation into a higher order of beauty and usefulness. We are to rule; that is, to serve and give, sacrifice and look to the interests of others. What a breathtaking mission for a marriage of two people. Pastor Steve Muzio states, "Marriage is designed as an alliance of two souls knit and working together to obey these commands. However, because of sin's entrance into the world, marriage is now more likely a battlefield of two individuals seeking to gain an advantage on the other. Too few are willing to lay down their arms... as they approach the other with offers of love and peace. Life is a battle and, unfortunately, in selfishness we make marriage yet another battleground instead of a holy alliance with a glorious purpose."[1] You have a purpose in your marriage -- in any relationship -- no matter its stage or state. The purpose is to create and nurture good, produce righteousness, and cultivate spiritual beauty in the other. You can either contribute to the good in your relationships, or to the decay. Find a way today to shape the world around you by giving, serving, and sacrificing. Confess to your friend or spouse any selfishness which may have eroded your relationship. Nurture the good. Create, produce, and shape into a higher order of loveliness, your world around you and the people in it. Oh, God, help me to regain your magnificent mission in my marriage... in my relationships with those for whom I care.
