The Blood of the New Covenant
'The time is coming,' declares the Lord, 'when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,' declares the Lord. 'This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,' declares the Lord. 'I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.' --Jeremiah 31:31-33 In the old covenant God made with Abraham, He swore He would never forget His people. But just a casual reading of the Old Testament shows they forgot Him. One sin led to another, and soon there wasn't a commandment Israel hadn't broken. Who now deserved to be cut in two?! But God had created His people to mirror Him, not to be miniatures of Lucifer. It would take great wisdom and compassion on the part of God to save His people without trivializing their guilt, to cure them without letting the horror of sin ever be forgotten, to mingle mercy with justice. Hebrews 9:15 explains how He did it: "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant... he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant." Amazing love! Remember the old covenant? God "cut Himself" and bled so that man might not be cut off from Him. Jesus Christ, the Son of Man fulfilled the old covenant and made a new one, a better one, hallelujah, and "... You have come to God, the judge of all men... to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word..." (Hebrews 12:23-24). I am humbled, precious Lord, that you bled and died so that I might be rescued. Thank you!
